KHAMSIN - Khamsin began as the reverb-laden solo project of vocalist/guitarist Jacob Curry in Nashville, TN. With friends, the dreamo band leaned into lyrically based, emo-infused indie rock with jagged, linear guitar riffs and a rolling rhythm section.

Early on, Khamsin won over fans in Nashville basements, DIY spaces, and clubs with their live show. Featuring twinkling precision and fuzz-ridden guitar-work, both odd and sway-worthy rhythms and Curry's vocals, which shift from gentle tenor to throat-shredding vocal fry at a moment's notice. The band pushed out into the Midwest and East Coast in support of their debut EP, “I’ve Only Been A Thief”, follow up EP, “Let Me See Clearly”, and the dual single “A Brief Look Down”. At home and on the road, Khamsin has shared the stage with Pianos Become the Teeth, Delta Sleep, The Appleseed Cast, Caracara, and Valleyheart, among others.

Beginning in 2020, Khamsin convened to develop their deeply introspective debut LP, “What’s Left of Life?”, with producer Braxton Matlock. The album is a deeply personal concept record that explores the aftermath of the sudden loss of Curry’s father. As a songwriter, Curry draws from both his upbringing in the evangelical church (I’ll stick to my sackcloth and ash/Won’t take down my harp and sing) and his background in biochemical research (Dye front flows/Won’t you follow?). The 9 tracks constructed from the artful, dynamic post-hardcore and impressionistic lyricism are stories detailing newfound anxiety, grappling with mortality, and relishing in the past to stabilize your future. Khamsin self-released “What’s Left of Life?” in May 2022.

Khamsin is: Jacob Curry (vocals, guitar), Cole Harrison (bass), Darin Harger (drums, percussion), Ben Beauchene (guitar)

loud music from tulsa
Hallucinations, the third LP from Tulsa’s indie rock explorers Nuns, picks up where the group’s dreamy-yet-soaring previous albums left off, and somehow one-ups the whole affair. Hallucinations is dreamier...soarier…even more gorgeous than its criminally overlooked forebears.

The crystalline melodies of Nun’s frontman/songwriter/producer, Hank Hanewinkel III—often shrouded in cosmic waves of fizzing guitars, scintillating keyboards and swirling, distorted drums—float above the beautiful din like a lonely searchlight sweeping the horizon. At the center of it all are Hanewinkel’s haunted vocals, full of unanswered questions, wounded observations, and full-throated declarations of love, refracted through gauzy waves of life and reminiscence.

But make no mistake, this introspection isn’t a quiet affair. Hallucinations is best experienced loud. It’s a churning, cinematic launch into the stratosphere. And trust me…you want to take this trip.
